Dear Doctor,
I don't know
about you, but I'm really tired of opening up the newspapers and
magazines and finding them riddled with drug ad after drug ad.
Before I can
put out any new magazine for my patients, I have to spend at least
6 to 7 minutes thumbing through them so I can rip out all of those

is for some medication whose side effects are WORSE then the symptoms

Frankly, I'm
sick of it, and as a chiropractor, I really think this country is
headed down a very sick and destructive road.
And I really
do believe, with all of my being, that all of the ads we see and
hear are making us sicker, just because that's all we see and hear.
Where
is the Chiropractic Marketing?
How many Chiropractors
or Chiropractic Associations
are advertising like this?!
We don't. We're
not. We can't. And it's very, very sad.
As you may already
know, unfortunately, Chiropractic doesn't have war chests of billions
to spend on chiropractic advertising, and a few hundred thousand
lobbyists in Washington, D.C. So we do what we can in our offices.
We offer spinal care classes, outside lectures, spinal screenings,
and pay for small advertising ads either in the newspaper or money
mailers. We do whatever we can do to increase chiropractic patient
education. But it's not enough.
Our small business
advertising budget doesn't allow us to compete. We just can't afford
to buy our way in like the pharmaceutical companies do. Not yet,
anyway.
Understanding

The other day
I was reading a study by Consumer Reports and I almost fell over
when I read a recent drug study.
The researchers
found that approximately 78% of people who went to their medical
doctors requesting a specific drug, got that drug!
People
bought what the
TV TOLD THEM TO BUY!
And –
What's even crazier than that?
If the
medical doctor didn't prescribe them what they wanted…
they left their
doctor, and went from medical doctor to medical doctor until they
finally found one who would give them that specific drug.
People

necessary to send out all of the newsletters at once, without
spamming your patients.
It's also
a great way to give your patients a chiropractic education
while reminding them of you on a regular basis.
The biggest
challenge with this type of marketing strategy though, is
that you're marketing only to your existing patients, and
not to those who you haven't met yet.
Now that's
not exactly a bad thing. A professional marketing company
will always tell you that it's cheaper to advertise to your
current patients. They already know you, they know how chiropractic
can help them, and most of them love you. So keeping in touch
with them allows you to keep that already established relationship
going.
What I
am saying though, is that these newsletters don't introduce
you to new faces, people you haven't met yet. And your marketing
ideas should do both. |
2.
Understand that giving your community a Chiropractic Education
is just as important as growing your practice.
Chiropractic
makes sense. It's just that most people have been brainwashed
by those drug commercials that I mentioned to you earlier,
and because they never had a chiropractic education, they
choose to believe what the TV and other print media tell them.
Remember
the movie "Field Of Dreams"? In the movie Kevin
Costner, the main character, was hearing voices. "Build
it" the voices said, "and they will come".
Well,
I wish building a chiropractic practice was that easy. And
I'm sure you've already figured this out, But just because
you hung your "Open" sign doesn't mean that patients
are knocking down your doors.
Now, "Build
it, and advertise like there's no tomorrow, then they will
come" I think is a much more realistic, little voice.
Let's
face it, advertising works, and "buying" patients
isn't a bad thing. It's just an expensive one.
Providing
your town with a chiropractic education with articles and
tid-bits on the benefits of chiropractic care not only commits
you to your practice – even deeper – it also makes
it even easier for you to grow your practice.
Always
remember, the influence that you have on your current and
future patients is priceless.
The more
they learn about chiropractic, the more they know about you,
and the more often they see your name in the paper, in the
magazines or hear your voice on the radio, the more likely
they are to seek you out. |
3.
Commit to giving a certain percentage of your income every
month to advertising. The more you give, the more you get.
Keep in
mind however, there is a breaking point. Advertising is a
great way to "buy" patients. But unlike patient
referrals, as soon as you stop advertising, the new patients
stop too. So you want to be aware of just how much you are
spending and how much you are making.
Many chiropractors
say that a new patient is worth between $1500 - $2500. But
is this really your case? When's the last time you took your
office revenue and divided it by the number of patients you
have? Many of us think we know what a new patient is worth,
but most of us really don't.
Take the
time to find out what a new patient is worth in your office.
You may be surprised.
When you
advertise, your return should be at least four times what
you paid out for the advertisement. Anything less, you may
want to consider changing your type of advertising. |
